The MTA MetroCard is a magnetic stripe plastic card that serves as the legacy fare payment method for the New York City transit network.
Current Status
Sales & Refills: Permanently discontinued. New cards cannot be purchased, and existing cards cannot be reloaded.
Acceptance: Remaining card balances are still accepted at turnstiles and bus fareboxes. The MTA will announce the final retirement date later this year.
Fare Integration: Replaced by OMNY, the official tap-and-go digital fare payment system.
Specifications
Physical Dimensions: 3.375" W x 2.125" H (8.57 cm W x 5.40 cm D); standard CR80 credit card size.
Material: Flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic with a high-coercivity magnetic stripe.
Data Capacity: Stores up to 79 bytes of encrypted account information, including remaining balance, expiration date, and serial number.
